Chances are if you’re on a site called Made + Remade, you’ve seen cool old vintage doorknobs turned into coatracks. The tricky thing with vintage knobs is removing rusty old hardware and having screw threads that are still workable. Totally doable, but it takes some time and elbow grease. This solution uses the less-sought-after hollow doorknobs and an easier attachment solution. Slipping the knobs onto wine corks causes enough friction to hold the knob securely in place.
Not everybody has five old and unused doorknobs just sitting around. I found mine at Build It Green in NYC. Local architectural salvage stores, thrift shops, and ebay are all great resources for finding old fixtures like door knobs. The best part is that the hollow door knobs are generally a lot cheaper than their vintage door knob counterparts. Using found objects and scrap materials is key to keeping projects low on budget and high on style.
This upcycling project will open the door to organizing your coats, totes, and more.
